Moholy-Nagy’s Lichtspiel

Moholy-Nagy’s Lichtspiel Schwarz-Weiss-Grau (Lightplay Black-White-Gray)

This short abstract film made by the Hungarian photographer and painter László Moholy-Nagy is based on the shadow patterns created by his Light-Space Modulator, a sculpture consisting of a variety of curved objects in a carefully choreographed cycle of movements – not only to form a kinetic object, but in the first place to modulate light and the performance of space.

Created in 1930, the film was originally planned as the sixth and final part of a much longer work depicting the new space-time.

László Moholy-Nagy was at that time teacher at the Bauhaus school – based in Dessau between 1925 and 1932.
